You have heard me say so many times, "everything in moderation." This is something I truly believe in to live a life of balance. It is not something that comes easy but it comes with practice and self-discipline.
You can have your cake and eat it too as long as you watch the size of your slice.
Portion control is one of those things that is HARD and the need for self control is probably why people tend to just cut certain foods out completely. They think it may be easier to not even tempt themselves with certain foods. So they take out carbs completely or decide to eat very little fat (and it lasts maybe for a week until they are caught cramming their mouth with all its goodness). The truth is though, cutting foods out completely is harder on you mentally and physically. When you deprive yourself of certain foods, you eventually cave and end up binging on the foods you didn't allow yourself to have. We all want what we can't have, right?
